Books I Can’t Wait to Read: 2018 Edition

You’d think with a TBR eight miles long, I wouldn’t go looking for more books to add to it. But with the creation of this list, I probably added about 20…. I think I have a problem. Anyways, that is besides the point. I would like to welcome you to a roundup of several books I am very excited to see released in the coming year. Most people are all about New Years resolutions, but very few rarely keep them. I might make a resolution about something like “finishing my TBR”, but we all know I’d fail at that anytime, anyday (#bookwormprobs). Before I get off track again, let’s move on to the list!

Ink

Inkmistress by Audrey Coulthurst
Release Date:
March 6th, 2018
Asra is a demigod with a dangerous gift: the ability to dictate the future by writing with her blood. To keep her power secret, she leads a quiet life as a healer on a remote mountain, content to help the people in her care and spend time with Ina, the mortal girl she loves.

But Asra’s peaceful life is upended when bandits threaten Ina’s village and the king does nothing to help. Desperate to protect her people, Ina begs Asra for assistance in finding her manifest—the animal she’ll be able to change into as her rite of passage to adulthood. Asra uses her blood magic to help Ina, but her spell goes horribly wrong and the bandits destroy the village, killing Ina’s family.

Unaware that Asra is at fault, Ina swears revenge on the king and takes a savage dragon as her manifest. To stop her, Asra must embark on a journey across the kingdom, becoming a player in lethal games of power among assassins, gods, and even the king himself. Most frightening of all, she discovers the dark secrets of her own mysterious history—and the terrible, powerful legacy she carries in her blood.

I love the different take on magic here, anything that goes outside the normal “spells and incantations” type of magic always intrigues me.

Before

Before I Let Go by Marieke Nijkamp
Release Date: January 23rd, 2018
Days before Corey is to return home to the snow and ice of Lost Creek, Alaska, to visit her best friend, Kyra dies. Corey is devastated―and confused. The entire Lost community speaks in hushed tones about the town’s lost daughter, saying her death was meant to be. And they push Corey away like she’s a stranger.

Corey knows something is wrong. Lost is keeping secrets―chilling secrets. But piecing together the truth about what happened to her best friend may prove as difficult as lighting the sky in an Alaskan winter.

I first was interested because I’ve read Nijkamp’s work before. You can read my review of her book This is How it Ends here. I also really would like to know exactly what’s going on in this creepy town.

Pretty

#Prettyboy Must Die by Kimberly Reid
Release Date: 2018
When Peter Smith’s classmate snaps a picture of him during a late night run at the track, Peter thinks he might be in trouble. When she posts that photo–along with the caption, “See the Pretty Boy Run,”–Peter knows he’s in trouble. But when hostiles drop through the ceiling of his 6th period Chem Class, Peter’s pretty sure his trouble just became a national emergency.

Because he’s not really Peter Smith. He’s Jake Morrow, former foster-kid turned CIA operative. After a massive screw-up on his first mission, he’s on a pity assignment, a dozen hit lists and now, social media, apparently. As #Prettyboy, of all freaking things.

His cover’s blown, his school’s under siege, and if he screws up now, #Prettyboy will become #Deadboy faster than you can say, ‘fifteen minutes of fame.’ Trapped in a high school with rabid killers and rabid fans, he’ll need all his training and then some to save his job, his school and, oh yeah, his life.

I’m all for a male protag, as I feel a lot of YA has a female MC. Plus I liked the premise, so I’m interested to read this thriller.

Last Girl

The Last Girl on Earth by Alexandra Blogier
Release Date: January 23rd, 2018
Li has a father and a sister who love her. A best friend, Mirabae, to share things with. She goes to school and hangs out at the beach and carefully follows the rules. She has to. Everyone she knows–her family, her teachers, her friends–is an alien. And she is the only human left on Earth.

The Abdoloreans hijacked the planet sixteen years ago, destroying all human life. Li’s human-sympathizer father took her in as a baby and has trained her to pass as one of them. The Abdoloreans appear human. But they don’t think with human minds or feel with human hearts. And they have special abilities no human could ever have.

When Li meets Ryn, she’s swept up in a relationship that could have disastrous consequences. How far will Li go to stay alive? Will she save herself–and in turn, the human race–or will she be the final witness to humanity’s destruction?

I need more sci-fi in my life. I honestly clicked on this because of the cover (so pretty), but then the concept caught me and now I’m hooked.

As

As She Fades by Abbi Glines
Release Date: April 3rd, 2018
On the night of her high school graduation, Vale McKinley and her boyfriend Crawford are in a terrible car accident. They were supposed to spend the summer planning for college, for a bright future full of possibility. Together. Instead, Vale spends long days in the hospital, hoping Crawford will awaken from a coma.

Slate Allen, a college friend of Vale’s brother, has been visiting his dying uncle at the same hospital. When he and Vale meet, she can’t deny the flutter of an illicit attraction. She tries to ignore her feelings, but she’s not immune to Slate’s charm. Slowly, they form a cautious friendship.

Then, Crawford wakes up… with no memory of Vale or their relationship. Heartbroken, Vale opts to leave for college and move on with her life. Except now, she’s in Slate’s territory, and their story is about to take a very strange detour.

The premise is similar to stories I’ve read before, but I’m interested to see where this one goes. I also like the cover. I know, judging by the cover. #bookshame. I haven’t read too many contemporaries recently, so maybe this will revive my interest in the genre.

Untitled (Red Queen #4) by Victoria Aveyard
Release Date: 2018
We don’t even have a summary for this book yet but I’m still excited. I need more resolutions for this story, the last book left us on such a cliffhanger. I want Mare to be strong and independent, she is fierce on her own without either brother! I want all the story nowwwwww.

Well friends, that is just the tip of the iceberg but it concludes my post for today. Let me know in the comments if you’re looking forward to a particular book in this next year, I love reading recommendations!

11 Beautiful YA Covers I Must Have

Everyone says don’t judge a book by it’s cover, but when the covers are this beautiful, it’s hard not to. I’m a photographer and graphic designer, so I absolutely love covers that are well done and, if they’re a series, cohesive. Today were taking a look at the ones that I believe are the best covers I’ve seen so far. I wish I had all of these in physical book form so that they could be featured on my Bookstagram all day, every day. But, alas, I only own one currently. My wallet would be weeping if I tried to buy them all haha.

The Heir

There’s something about a girl in a beautiful dress that just automatically draws my eye. This is the fourth book (technically), and I did like the first three covers, but I think this one is my favorite overall. Funny enough, the final book is actually my least favorite cover. But, this hasn’t stopped me from putting the entire box set on my Amazon wishlist.

Reboot

I love the simplicity in this design. The barcode sets the tone for a dystopian type of society, and that tagline immediately made me pick up the book. It is still one of my top books today. I should really read it again sometime… (meanwhile my TBRs that I haven’t touched are weeping in the corner)

Red Queen

I feel like white is not a very popular cover color choice, but here it just works out beautifully. The crown is on full display, and the fact that it’s upside down and the blood pouring over it says to me that this will not be the fairytale that most stories featuring royalty are. Also, both the books and the covers get darker as they go along, so I’m extremely excited to see the cover for and read the fourth installment!

cinder

The Cinderella parallel here is unavoidable, and yet at the same time the robotic foot tells me that there is a huge twist to the traditional narrative. I actually put off this series for several years at first, but then as soon as I finally picked up the first book, it immediately went on my favorites of all time.

Zero Day

There are so many good components in this cover. The American flag pattern is perfect for the subject matter, and then there’s all the little hidden messages in the coding throughout the rest of the cover.

Cinder

This is actually the redesigned cover for this book, and thank goodness it got a new cover because the first was atrocious! This one portrays the book’s vibes so much better with the colorful background and the beautiful typography.

Shatter

As with the previous, this cover was not the original work. I didn’t really care for the first one, but it wasn’t too bad. True, the eye doesn’t particularly connect with the storyline here but I love the way that it looks when the series is all paired together. I’ve only read the first book, I should really get to the others soon…

Passenger

This book is literally sitting on my bedside table, just waiting to be read. That is, if I could actually stop the rest of my life and just spend hours reading. But, that’s besides the point. I love the city in the bottle instead of a ship in the bottle, and I also can’t wait to read the sequel to this!

Fixer

I don’t know what it is about this one, but I just love the cover. The typography with the title, dragging the ‘x’ across the whole cover, makes for a good point of interest. The green/blue/red contrast is a color combo not often seen, so that’s also part of the reason why it might stand out to me.

Lavendar

All the typography! Typography is my favorite form of art. Nothing against people book covers, but there is just so much more space for expression on covers like this. I love the detailing in the feather, I just want to keep it and read this book forever!

Chasing Ella_front cover_for promo use only.2

This final cover just got revealed in one of my recent posts, and I adore the typeface as well as the girl modeling on the front. I could honestly do without the guy, he seems a bit awkward, but I love the girl’s hair and mask.
